As a psychologist I was appalled by this policy. I hope they have come to their senses and will abide by their own statement of objectives.

Now it says: "A new document deposit policy of the American Psychological Association (APA) requiring a publication fee to deposit manuscripts in PubMed Central based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently being re-examined and will not be implemented at this time."

Well, some of the outrage seems to have penetrated at APA--the statement no longer says the $2,500 fee is billed to the university "per NIH policy". Now it just says, "The deposit fee of $2,500 per manuscript for 2008 will be billed to the author's university." Of course that was the least of the problems with this policy.

I wonder how much NIH-funded research is published in APA journals
